What is Play Therapy?

Play is how children make sense of the world—it’s their natural language. Play Therapy gives them a safe and supportive space to express their feelings, process experiences, and build emotional resilience, all without the pressure of finding the right words. Through creative play, storytelling, art, and imaginative activities, children can explore big emotions in a way that feels natural and safe to them.

Guided by a trained therapist, Play Therapy helps children navigate challenges like anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, or difficulties with relationships. It’s not about teaching or instructing—it’s about giving children the freedom to explore, heal, and grow at their own pace, with gentle support every step of the way.

FAQs

  • Each play therapy session lasts a ‘clinical hour’—about 50 minutes of one-to-one playtime, with a few minutes at the beginning and end to help your child settle in and transition smoothly.

Once in the session, your child is free to play in their own way, within safe and supportive boundaries. They can choose how much or little they’d like the therapist to be involved, allowing them to explore their feelings at their own pace.

Throughout the session, the play therapist gently follows their lead—reflecting, listening, and responding with warmth and understanding. These small but meaningful interactions help your child make sense of their emotions, build confidence, and feel truly heard.

As therapy progresses, the therapist will support your child in recognising their growth, gently guiding them toward a well-planned and nurturing ending to their therapeutic journey.

  • Play therapy is a private space for your child, designed to help them explore their thoughts and feelings safely. We describe confidentiality as ‘private but not secret’—meaning your child is free to share whatever they like about their sessions, but their therapist will only share details if there are serious concerns about their safety or the safety of others.

While individual session details remain private, you’ll be kept informed through interim and final review meetings. During these, the therapist will share general themes of play, insights into your child’s progress, and guidance on how to support them at home—always in a way that respects their therapeutic journey. If your child wishes for something to be shared on their behalf, we will do so with care and sensitivity.

  • Play therapy sessions can take place at your child’s school, making it easy for them to access support in a familiar setting. If this isn’t possible, we’ll work together to find a suitable alternative space.

Consistency is an important part of play therapy, so sessions will always be held in the same place, at the same time each week. This routine helps children feel safe, secure, and ready to engage in their therapeutic journey.

  • Every child’s journey in play therapy is unique, so the number of sessions needed will depend on their individual circumstances.

At the start, we’ll agree on an initial number of sessions, but there’s always the flexibility to extend if more support is needed. The goal is to ensure your child gets the time and space they need to work through their feelings at their own pace.

  • For a personalised breakdown of fees, please get in touch—we’re happy to provide costings tailored to your needs.

At Daisy Chain Play Therapy, the session fee covers much more than just the 50-minute session—it also includes up to 30 minutes of travel, play kit and resource costs, setup and tidy-up time, note-making, and supervision.

Additional costs apply for extra travel time, report writing, and meetings.
